What Is Wordplete?

Wordplete is a free browser-based word logic game that combines vocabulary recognition with number-based deduction. Instead of guessing a secret word, players receive a complete grid of letters and must work out which letters to remove.

Every row and every column contains a hidden English word. Numbers beside the grid indicate how many letters belong to each word. By crossing out filler letters, players gradually uncover all the words while satisfying the numerical clues.

Created through a collaboration between crossword constructor Jeff Chen and Hey, Good Game!, Wordplete is closely related to Sumplete, a number puzzle built around eliminating unnecessary values.

The game offers daily challenges and an unlimited mode, making it suitable for both quick daily sessions and longer puzzle-solving sessions.

Wordplete Rules and Core Mechanics

The objective is to identify the filler letters so that the remaining letters in every row and column spell valid English words.

The important rules are:

  • Every row contains a word. Read the remaining letters from left to right.
  • Every column contains a word. Read the remaining letters from top to bottom.
  • Numbers indicate letters to keep. A row labeled 3 must retain three letters, not remove three letters.
  • Letters can count twice. A single letter can belong to both its horizontal and vertical words.
  • Letter order matters. You cannot rearrange the remaining letters into an anagram.
  • Every decision affects two directions. Removing a letter changes both its row and its column.

Unlike Wordle, Wordplete does not involve entering guesses or interpreting colored feedback. The entire puzzle is visible from the beginning, and the challenge is identifying which letters are necessary.

The puzzle is designed to be solvable through logic rather than trial-and-error guessing.

How to Play Wordplete

  1. Choose a puzzle. Visit Wordplete and start the daily 5x5 puzzle, select the daily 7x7 challenge, or open Unlimited mode.
  2. Read the number clues. Look at the numbers on the right of each row and below each column. These tell you exactly how many letters must remain in each line.
  3. Identify unnecessary letters. Examine possible words and use the intersecting row and column counts to determine which letters are filler.
  4. Mark the grid. Tap a letter once to cross it out with an X. Tap it again to circle it as a word letter. A third tap clears the mark. On desktop, right-clicking circles a letter directly.
  5. Complete the puzzle. Continue checking both directions until all filler letters are crossed out or all required word letters are circled. The puzzle completes when the markings match the solution.

Example: Understanding the Number Clues

Imagine a four-letter row with a target of three letters:

C A T Z | 3

If the intended word is CAT, the letter Z must be removed:

C A T X | 3

The X represents the crossed-out Z. The three remaining letters spell CAT.

However, this is only an illustrative row, not a complete puzzle. In an actual Wordplete grid, removing Z must also be consistent with the vertical word and number clue in its column.

That intersection between horizontal and vertical constraints is the central challenge.

Wordplete Strategy Tips

Start With Easy Number Clues

A row or column labeled 0 contains only filler letters. Cross out every letter in that line.

If a line's number equals its total length, all its letters must remain. These clues offer immediate deductions without requiring vocabulary knowledge.

Use Intersections

Every square belongs to a row and a column. Before crossing out a letter, consider how that decision changes the vertical and horizontal words.

If a column already contains its required number of confirmed word letters, every remaining unconfirmed letter in that column must be filler.

Look for Nearly Complete Words

A five-letter row that must retain four letters offers relatively few possibilities. Recognizing a familiar four-letter word can help narrow down which letter to remove.

Always verify the corresponding column before treating a possible word as confirmed.

Count the Remaining Letters

If a line requires three letters and only three uncrossed letters remain, those letters must be kept.

If a row already has all its required letters circled, the remaining squares can be eliminated.

Use the Number Shortcuts

When a line already has the correct number of circled letters, tapping its number can cross out the remaining letters automatically.

Similarly, when only the required number of uncrossed letters remains, tapping the number can circle them.

Check Both Counts and Words

Matching the numerical clues is essential, but the remaining letters also need to form the intended English words.

Read horizontal words from left to right and vertical words from top to bottom. If a combination does not make sense, revisit its intersections.

Wordplete Game Modes

Wordplete provides three main ways to play:

Mode Description
Daily 5x5 A new five-by-five puzzle every day, shared by all players.
Daily 7x7 A larger daily puzzle with longer words and more complex intersections.
Unlimited Generate fresh puzzles in sizes ranging from 4x4 to 8x8.

The daily modes are useful for establishing a regular puzzle routine and comparing results with friends. Unlimited mode lets players continue practicing without waiting for the next day's challenge.

Hints and Helpful Controls

Wordplete includes several tools for managing difficult puzzles:

  • Hint: Explains a logical deduction that can help you make progress.
  • Check: Identifies markings that contradict the intended solution.
  • Undo: Reverses a previous move.
  • Clear or Reset: Restarts the current puzzle.
  • Reveal: Displays the solution in Unlimited mode.

Hints and checks are available in daily puzzles as well as Unlimited mode. Hint usage is recorded in the results, allowing players to distinguish unaided solves from assisted ones.

Is Wordplete Like Wordle?

Despite their similar names, Wordplete and Wordle play quite differently.

Wordle asks players to guess an unknown word using colored letter feedback. Wordplete presents all the letters immediately and asks players to determine which ones should remain.

Wordplete is closer to Sudoku, Nonograms, and Sumplete because it relies on intersecting constraints and elimination.

Players who enjoy word games but prefer deduction over repeated guessing may find Wordplete particularly appealing.

Is Wordplete Free?

Yes. Wordplete is free to play in a web browser, including the daily challenges and Unlimited mode. No installation or account is required to start playing.

An optional free Hey Good Game account can save streaks and statistics across devices.

Who Should Play Wordplete?

Wordplete is particularly suitable for:

  • Players who enjoy Sudoku-style deduction and number clues.
  • Fans of daily word puzzles looking for a different challenge.
  • People who enjoy discovering hidden words without typing guesses.
  • Puzzle enthusiasts who like grid-based challenges with overlapping constraints.
  • Players who want both daily puzzles and unlimited practice.

An extensive vocabulary is not essential. The numerical clues provide much of the information needed to solve each board, although recognizing familiar English words can speed up progress.

Final Take

Wordplete offers a distinctive combination of word recognition and logical deduction. Its main appeal is the interaction between row and column clues: every eliminated letter influences two potential words, creating satisfying chains of deductions.

With free daily 5x5 and 7x7 challenges, unlimited puzzles, and built-in hints, Wordplete is an accessible option for players seeking a thoughtful alternative to traditional word-guessing games.
