What Is Dotadle?
Dotadle is a daily Dota 2 guessing game inspired by the deduction format popularized by Wordle and LoLdle. Instead of guessing letters, you identify Dota 2 heroes using knowledge of their attributes, roles, abilities, voice lines, and artwork.
The game was created by the developer behind LoLdle, Pokédle, Smashdle, and several similar character-guessing games. Dotadle focuses entirely on Valve's Dota 2 hero roster.
There are four main daily modes:
- Classic: identify a hidden hero through attribute comparisons.
- Quote: identify the hero responsible for an in-game voice line.
- Ability: identify a hero from an ability icon.
- Loading Screen: recognize a hero from a cropped section of loading-screen artwork.
Each mode provides a separate puzzle, so a daily Dotadle session can be much longer than a single hero guess.
Classic Mode and the Core Twist
Classic is Dotadle's main deduction mode. You begin without a direct picture or description of the answer. Instead, you submit any Dota 2 hero and compare that hero's characteristics with the hidden target.
The comparison can include attributes such as:
- gender;
- species;
- primary attribute;
- melee or ranged attack type;
- complexity;
- hero roles;
- release year.
Color feedback shows which properties match. Exact matches are highlighted positively, partial overlaps can appear when a multi-value category such as roles shares some characteristics, and mismatches tell you which properties to eliminate.
Ordered values such as complexity or release year can also use directional clues to indicate whether the target's value is higher or lower than your guess.
A simplified deduction might look like this:
Guess: Strength + Melee + 2011 hero
Result: wrong attribute + correct attack type + target released later
You can now stop looking at Strength heroes, retain melee candidates, and concentrate on heroes introduced after the guessed release year.
The challenge is not simply remembering hero names. Good guesses are chosen because they divide the remaining roster efficiently.
How To Play Dotadle
- Choose one of the four modes. Start with Classic if you want deduction, or choose Quote, Ability, or Loading Screen for a recognition challenge.
- Submit a Dota 2 hero. In Classic, choose a hero whose basic characteristics you know well so the resulting comparison is easy to interpret.
- Read every clue. Use exact matches, partial matches, mismatches, and higher-or-lower indicators to eliminate heroes that cannot be the answer.
- Make increasingly targeted guesses. Combine all confirmed information rather than focusing on just one property until the mystery hero is found.
- Try the other daily modes. Each mode uses a different hidden hero and tests a different kind of Dota 2 knowledge.
Classic Mode Example
Imagine your first guess is a ranged Intelligence hero and the feedback shows that the target has a different primary attribute but the same attack type.
That immediately tells you to keep looking among ranged heroes while excluding Intelligence candidates.
Suppose your second hero also reveals that the hidden hero has a later release year and shares at least one role with your guess.
Your remaining candidate profile might now look like:
Ranged + not Intelligence + newer release + overlapping role
A third carefully selected hero can test another primary attribute, a different release period, and additional role combinations at the same time.
This is the heart of Dotadle: every wrong answer should make the next guess more informed.
Quote Mode
Quote mode gives you an in-game Dota 2 voice line and asks which hero says it.
This mode rewards players who recognize hero personalities, accents, rivalries, jokes, lore references, and frequently heard responses from actual matches.
A quote may contain an obvious thematic clue, but difficult rounds can rely on lines that are rarely heard or could plausibly belong to several heroes.
If you have played hundreds of matches with or against a particular hero, their voice can make this mode much easier than Classic.
Ability Mode
Ability mode presents an ability icon and asks you to identify the hero it belongs to.
Dota 2 ability art often contains useful visual clues. Fire, ice, lightning, weapons, creatures, magical symbols, and colors can all point toward particular heroes.
For example, an unmistakable hook-shaped icon should immediately make you think about heroes associated with hooks, while a blue frost-themed spell can suggest a much smaller group of ice-oriented characters.
Some icons are extremely recognizable. Passive abilities and abstract buff icons tend to create the hardest rounds because they provide fewer obvious visual references.
Loading Screen Mode
Loading Screen mode shows only part of a Dota 2 loading-screen image and asks you to recognize the featured hero.
The initial crop may reveal little more than a color palette, weapon, armor detail, or background element. You need to connect those fragments with your memory of Dota artwork and cosmetic sets.
This mode can be more difficult than identifying a normal hero portrait because loading screens frequently use dramatic poses, alternate costumes, and unusual compositions.
Look for silhouettes and signature equipment rather than relying entirely on costume colors.
Strategy Tips for Classic Mode
Start With a Hero You Know Well
Your opening guess is most useful when you already know its primary attribute, attack type, roles, complexity, and approximate release period. A famous hero is usually a better reference point than an obscure character whose data you cannot remember.
Lock Down Primary Attribute Early
Dota 2 divides heroes among Strength, Agility, Intelligence, and Universal primary attributes. Confirming or excluding one of these groups can remove a large part of the roster immediately.
Use Melee or Ranged as a Fast Filter
Attack type is a simple binary characteristic. Once it is confirmed, every hero using the opposite attack type can be ignored.
Read Release-Year Direction Carefully
The release-year clue is especially useful because it creates a chronological boundary. If the target is newer than your guess, older candidates can be discarded. A second strategically chosen release year can narrow that window further.
Treat Role Overlap as Supporting Evidence
Dota heroes commonly have several roles, so a partial match may not uniquely identify anyone. Use roles alongside stronger clues such as primary attribute, attack type, and release period rather than treating them as your only filter.
Do Not Repeat Information You Already Know
Once a property has been eliminated, choose a hero that tests something different. Guessing several nearly identical heroes can waste opportunities to learn new information.
Which Dotadle Mode Should You Play First?
Classic is the best starting point if you enjoy deduction and know hero statistics reasonably well.
Quote suits players who remember Dota's voice acting and character personalities.
Ability is ideal if spell icons are permanently burned into your memory after years of matches.
Loading Screen is the most visually focused mode and rewards familiarity with hero artwork and cosmetics.
Playing all four gives a much broader test of Dota knowledge than Classic alone.
Is Dotadle Worth Playing?
Dotadle is an excellent daily game for Dota 2 players because it tests knowledge accumulated naturally through playing the game. You do not need encyclopedic knowledge of patch numbers or professional tournaments; familiarity with heroes, abilities, roles, voices, and artwork is enough to participate.
Casual players can use Classic's feedback to reason their way toward unfamiliar heroes, while experienced players can chase quick solves across all four modes.
