What is Letterboxdle?
Letterboxdle is a free daily movie puzzle that turns viewer reviews into clues. Instead of recognizing a film still, you interpret what somebody wrote about a movie: a plot observation, a joke or an oddly specific reaction.
Classic gives you six attempts to identify the film. Letterboxdle is an independent project, with no affiliation to Letterboxd.
How the six-guess clue ladder works
You begin with one review. Incorrect guesses unlock further clues, with five review clues arranged from harder to easier. On the sixth and final attempt, the game adds a blurred poster and the film's watch count.
The official explanation of clue selection describes the review-based format. Read for concrete details, but remember that a viewer's tone may be playful rather than literal.
For an invented example, a review about “two strangers talking until sunrise” suggests a time span and a relationship, but leaves many films possible. A later reference to a train could help test that first idea. Build a case across clues instead of treating one phrase as proof.
How to play Letterboxdle Classic
- Open Letterboxdle and select Classic from the mode menu.
- Read the first review and identify its most specific details.
- Search for a movie title and select your guess. Check that you have the intended film, especially when titles have remakes.
- If the guess is wrong, read the next clue and revise your shortlist. Use the final poster and watch-count hint if you reach attempt six.
- Finish the puzzle to see the answer. Return for another daily movie or explore the Archive.
Archive, List Challenge and settings
The Archive provides earlier daily puzzles. List Challenge is a separate mode: name as many films as you can from a Letterboxd list. It rewards recalling titles across a collection, so it is useful when you want a change from solving one mystery film.
Settings include a colorblind mode that replaces green/red feedback with blue/orange. The full Classic rules show the clue sequence and end-of-game reveal.
Tips for interpreting review clues
Keep track of details that repeat across reviews, such as setting, relationships or an unusual event. Separate an actual plot clue from a joke that could describe many films. When you change your guess, make sure the new candidate explains more of the evidence than the previous one.
