What is n00b.gg?
n00b.gg tests how well you recognize video games from their visual identity. A round starts with either a pixelated gameplay screenshot or a deliberately obscured box cover, and you have six attempts to identify the full title. Familiar scenery can help, but interface details, art direction, and the release era often provide better leads.
The free guest round lets you try a random puzzle without signing in. The shared daily puzzles, saved progression, and leaderboard require an account; a guest result is not saved.
How the picture and hints change
In Screenshot mode, incorrect guesses bring the picture into clearer focus and unlock information such as genre, release year, developer, and the title's letter pattern. A wrong guess can also show whether the target game is older or newer than the title you selected.
Cover mode works differently. It begins with a coarse view of the packaging, then sharpens an increasingly tight crop. That makes the artwork more useful without simply revealing the printed title. The screenshot's one-use pixel lens is not available in Cover mode.
How to play your first round
- Choose Screenshot or Cover in the guest round, or sign in for the daily challenge.
- Press Start when you are ready; this starts the round's solve timer.
- Inspect the image and select a complete game title from the search catalog.
- Read any release-year direction and newly unlocked hints after a miss. In Screenshot mode, consider using the pixel lens on a distinctive detail.
- Refine your guesses until you identify the title or use all six attempts.
Tips for narrowing down the game
Separate the franchise from the specific installment. A familiar character might identify a series, while the interface, graphics style, and year hint tell you which release fits. For a pixel-lens choice, a health bar, inventory icon, or minimap usually gives you more information than an empty sky.
On covers, remember the first broad composition before later crops remove it. Use each new detail to test your original idea rather than starting over after every miss.
