What is Baffle?
Baffle is a museum-object guessing game. It presents an unusual, unlabeled artifact from an archive and asks you to describe what it is. You can supply a name, a function, or a short explanation rather than choosing from a multiple-choice list.
The site's AI scoring compares your wording with the identification. A partly correct description can earn credit, while relevant details can improve it. Recognizing the exact technical name is helpful, but it is not the only way to express what you have noticed.
Looking is part of the puzzle
Examine the object's shape, material, openings, handles, and wear before writing. A decorative surface can distract from the practical features that explain how something was held, attached, or used.
The home page distinguishes a daily challenge from a general Play a round option and includes Museum Mode and a leaderboard. Choose the daily challenge when you want to compare the same object with another player.
How to play
- Open Baffle and select Today's challenge for the shared daily object.
- Inspect the image and list the features you can actually see.
- Type a concise identification or functional description that connects those features.
- Submit your answer and compare the score and revealed information with your reasoning.
- Return for another daily challenge, or use the site's other round option to investigate more objects.
Make a specific, supported guess
For an imaginary object with a narrow handle and a small perforated bowl, “a handheld straining tool” communicates more than “an old metal thing.” That is a reasoning example, not a claim about today's artifact.
Separate observation from speculation. You may be confident that an object was worn or used for measuring without knowing its country or century. Adding an unsupported origin makes your explanation less reliable; describe the features that justify your main idea first.
Baffle is a good fit if you enjoy material culture, visual inference, and learning why an unfamiliar object was made.
