What Is ClueCrush?
ClueCrush is a browser-based daily word-connection puzzle built around a simple challenge: 16 words are hiding four different groups, and each group contains exactly four connected words.
Instead of guessing a secret spelling, you study the entire board and look for relationships between words. A connection might be a straightforward category, a shared phrase, a word association, or a less obvious piece of wordplay.
For example, a board could contain:
MERCURY · HAMMER · VENUS · JUPITER
NAIL · MARS · SCREW · DRILL
along with eight other words. If you identify MERCURY, VENUS, MARS, and JUPITER as four planets, you can select those four and submit them as a group. Solving a group removes it from the remaining possibilities and makes the rest of the puzzle easier to untangle.
ClueCrush follows the familiar Connections-style format but adds its own surrounding features, including daily puzzles, archived puzzles, hints, timed play, statistics, and other ways to keep playing beyond the day's challenge.
ClueCrush Rules and Core Twist
Every standard puzzle begins with 16 words arranged in a 4×4 grid. Your objective is to discover all four hidden connections.
Select exactly four words that you believe belong together and submit the group. If the connection is correct, those four words are locked in as a solved category. If it is wrong, you lose one of your remaining mistakes.
The important twist is ambiguity. Several words may appear to fit more than one possible category, so finding a relationship is not enough. You need a set of four that matches the puzzle's intended grouping without stealing a word required by another group.
A simple-looking clue can therefore be a trap. APPLE, for example, might relate to fruit, technology, New York, or words that appear in common phrases. ClueCrush rewards looking at the whole board rather than immediately submitting the first connection you notice.
How to Play ClueCrush
- Scan all 16 words first. Look for obvious categories, repeated themes, compound-word possibilities, or four items with a particularly strong relationship.
- Select four matching words. Tap or click four tiles that you think form one complete group. For example,
MARS,VENUS,EARTH, andJUPITERwould be a plausible planets group. - Submit the group. A correct set is confirmed and removed or separated from the unsolved words. An incorrect set costs a mistake, so avoid submitting weak guesses just to test an idea.
- Re-evaluate the remaining words. Each solved group reduces the number of competing interpretations. Shuffle the board or use a hint when available if the remaining associations are difficult to see.
- Find all four groups. Complete the puzzle before using up your allowed mistakes. You can then compare your performance, continue with archived puzzles, or try another available mode.
Strategy Tips
Start with the strongest four-word set rather than the most interesting one. A group where every word clearly fits the same narrow category is usually safer than a broad association that could absorb several other tiles.
Watch especially closely for overlap. If five words appear related, that is often a sign that one is deliberately acting as a decoy. Try to determine whether that extra word has an even stronger relationship with three other words elsewhere on the board.
Compound phrases are another useful angle. If individual meanings lead nowhere, test whether the words can all appear before or after the same missing word. Proper names, titles, homonyms, and words with multiple meanings can also produce less literal groups.
Finally, use solved groups as information. Once four words disappear, do not keep forcing your original theories onto the remaining twelve. ClueCrush is often easier when you repeatedly reassess the board after every successful connection.
