What is Cross Eights?
At first glance, it looks harmless: a small grid, a few numbers, maybe some blanks. But Cross Eights hides a strict rule beneath its simplicity—every row and every column must add up to exactly 8. No more, no less.
The twist? Every number you place affects everything else. Fill one cell, and suddenly two directions are locked into a new constraint. It’s a balancing act where every move echoes across the board, turning a simple math puzzle into a tight, tactical battle of precision.

Cross Eights Game Rules (The Catch / The Trap)
-
🎯 Target Sum: 8
Every row ➡️ and every column ⬇️ MUST total exactly 8. -
🔢 Limited Values
You can only place allowed numbers (usually small integers like 1–5 depending on the puzzle). -
❌ Overfilling is Fatal
If a row or column exceeds 8, that path is invalid—you must rethink your placement. -
🔒 Shared Cells, Shared Fate
Each cell belongs to BOTH a row and a column. One wrong number can break two directions at once. -
🧩 Partial Clues
Some numbers may already be placed, giving you a starting point—but also limiting your freedom immediately.

How To Play Cross Eights?
Step 1: Scan the Grid
Look for rows or columns that are almost complete.
→ Example: 3 + 2 + ? = 8 → Missing number is 3.
Step 2: Place Carefully
Fill in the obvious gaps first.
→ Result: You complete one row, but now that number affects a column.
Step 3: Cross-Check Constraints
Check the intersecting column:
→ 4 + ? + 3 = 8 → Missing number must be 1.
Step 4: Chain Reactions
Each correct placement unlocks another deduction.
→ The grid slowly tightens until only one valid configuration remains.
Step 5: Lock the Solution
When every row and column equals 8, you’ve solved the puzzle—clean, balanced, and exact.
Strategy & Tips
- 🧠 Start with the tightest lines: Rows or columns with the most filled cells are easiest to solve first.
- ⚖️ Think in complements: If you see a 5, you know the rest of that line must sum to 3.
- 🔄 Re-evaluate constantly: Every placement changes the entire grid—don’t tunnel vision.
- 🚫 Avoid guessing early: One wrong number can ripple into multiple dead ends.
Cross Eights isn’t about speed—it’s about control. Every number is a commitment, and every solution feels like a perfectly balanced equation snapping into place.
