What is Last Control: Decode?
Last Control: Decode is a daily codebreaking game presented as an intercepted transmission. Each round shows a line encrypted with a Caesar shift and asks you to choose the original English sentence from the answers on screen. A complete daily puzzle contains three rounds, with no timer pushing you to answer.
The shared challenge changes at midnight UTC. Its short format makes it a compact introduction to substitution ciphers without requiring a full cryptogram worksheet.
Understanding a Caesar shift
A Caesar cipher moves every letter by the same number of places through the alphabet, wrapping around after Z. With a shift of three, A becomes D and B becomes E. To decode the message, move the letters back by the corresponding amount.
As an illustrative example, KHOOR decodes to HELLO by shifting each letter back three places. Once a possible shift works for one word, it must also work for the rest of that round's sentence. Word lengths and repeated letters give you useful checks.
How to solve the three rounds
- Select Begin to open the daily transmission.
- Compare the encrypted line with the proposed English sentences.
- Test a short word or a repeated letter to identify a plausible alphabet shift.
- Apply that same shift to another part of the line before selecting an answer.
- Continue through the remaining rounds and review the daily result.
Codebreaking tips
A three-letter word is often a convenient starting point, but do not assume it must be THE. Verify the mapping elsewhere before committing. If one candidate has a different pattern of word lengths, eliminate it before doing letter-by-letter arithmetic.
Treat each new round as a fresh cipher check. The important skill is recognizing a consistent substitution across the full sentence, rather than remembering the setting from the previous round.
