What Is Layers?
Layers is a daily word puzzle built around two connected stages. You first solve four different mini-games, with each one revealing a word. Those four unlocked words then join twelve additional words on the Final Board, where you must divide all sixteen words into four groups of four.
The clever part is that the opening games are not separate side activities. Every answer you uncover becomes an actual piece of the final connection puzzle, so the entire daily challenge builds toward one larger solve.
The Four Mini-Games
Every Layers puzzle includes the same four formats, and you can tackle them in any order.
LetterLock
Guess a hidden five-letter word. After each attempt, colored feedback indicates letters that are correct, misplaced, or absent.
A simplified attempt might look like:
CRANE → some letters match, some are misplaced
Use that feedback to narrow the possibilities until you uncover the hidden word.
Anagram
You receive a scrambled collection of letters and rearrange them into one complete word.
For example:
R A E P → PEAR
If the answer is not obvious, reshuffling the letters can make a familiar pattern easier to notice.
Crossword
Solve crossing clues around a central answer. The surrounding clues can also provide thematic information that helps identify the word you need to unlock.
Word Search
Read a clue, identify its answer, and locate that word inside a compact letter grid. Words may appear horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Completing each mini-game gives you one of the four words that were missing from the Final Board.
The Final Board Twist
After the mini-games, your four unlocked answers join twelve other words to create a sixteen-word grid.
Your goal is to find four sets of four words. Each set shares a specific category, phrase, meaning, or pattern.
An illustrative group could be:
APPLE BANANA ORANGE PEAR
These four could form the category Fruits.
The difficulty comes from overlap. A word such as APPLE clearly fits with fruits, but it might also tempt you toward a group involving technology. Layers deliberately uses words with multiple plausible meanings to create misdirection.
Once you submit a correct group, those four words are removed and the connection is revealed. Wrong submissions use one of your limited mistakes, so guessing random combinations can end the Final Board early.
How to Play Layers
- Solve the four mini-games. Complete LetterLock, Anagram, Crossword, and Word Search in whichever order you prefer. Each puzzle unlocks one word for later.
- Study all sixteen words. Once the four answers have joined the twelve existing words, read the entire Final Board before making a selection.
- Find a strong group of four. Look for words connected by one precise theme rather than a loose similarity.
- Submit and repeat. A correct group disappears and reveals its category. Continue reorganizing the remaining words until all four groups are solved or you run out of allowed mistakes.
Strategy Tips
Start with your most certain group
Because mistakes are limited, avoid submitting a speculative group simply because three words seem related. Find four words with a clean, defensible connection first.
Watch for double meanings
Layers intentionally includes words that appear to belong in more than one category. If one word seems suspiciously obvious, consider its alternate meanings before locking it into a group.
Reevaluate after every solve
Removing four words can completely change how the remaining twelve look. Rather than sticking stubbornly to your earlier theories, scan the board again after every successful group.
Let the mini-games prime your thinking
You already spent time working with the four unlocked words, so they may attract your attention more than the other twelve. Treat them exactly like every other word on the Final Board—the fact that you unlocked two words in similar ways does not mean they belong in the same group.
Look for exact groups, not broad themes
Four words may all relate loosely to music, food, sports, or entertainment, but the intended connection is usually narrower. A specific shared phrase or subcategory is safer than a vague association.
