What Is Letterly?
Letterly is a free daily browser word game built around fast category thinking rather than guessing a hidden word. Each day, every player receives the same starting letter and the same ten categories, with only 90 seconds to enter an answer for as many categories as possible.
The important twist is originality. A valid answer that few other players choose is worth more than an obvious response that appears on lots of boards. That makes Letterly partly a vocabulary challenge and partly a game of predicting what everyone else will type.
There is no download or account required for the main game. Letterly also supports daily streaks, shareable results, and private friend leagues.
Rules and the Originality Twist
Every answer must start with the day's letter and genuinely belong to the category shown.
For example, imagine the daily letter is A:
| Category | Possible answer | Scoring idea |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit | Apple | Very obvious, so likely to score relatively low |
| Fruit | Atemoya | Less common, so potentially more valuable |
| Country | Argentina | Valid, but likely to be chosen by other players |
| Country | Angola | Also valid and potentially less common |
Letterly compares answers with those submitted by other players and uses a baseline pool of common answers so that obvious choices do not receive maximum originality scores simply because you played early in the day. Answers are also checked to make sure they actually fit their categories.
There is one extra complication: each round secretly contains a bonus word in one of the ten categories. It is deliberately an obvious answer, and finding it awards 100 bonus points. You do not know which category contains the bonus until the round is finished.
That creates the game's central tension: unusual answers normally score better, but being too clever in every category could make you miss the hidden jackpot.
How to Play Letterly
- Open the daily round. You will see today's shared starting letter and ten category prompts.
- Start entering answers. Each response must begin with the displayed letter and fit its category. You have 90 seconds for the entire board.
- Mix safe and unusual choices. Instead of automatically using the first answer that comes to mind, look for valid alternatives other players may overlook.
- Finish the round and check your score. Letterly evaluates your answers, rewards originality, and reveals whether you found the hidden 100-point bonus word.
- Compare or share your result. Continue your daily streak, share the result card, or compete through a private friend league if you want some asynchronous rivalry.
Strategy Tips
Avoid the first answer that comes to mind
If a category says Fruit and the letter is A, Apple is probably what thousands of other players will think of first. A legitimate but less predictable answer can be much more valuable.
Do not chase obscurity at the expense of validity
An unusual answer only helps if it actually belongs to the category. A recognizable but uncommon answer is usually safer than an extremely obscure term you are unsure about.
Remember the hidden bonus
Letterly intentionally rewards one obvious answer each day with a 100-point bonus. Because you cannot see its category beforehand, occasionally keeping the strongest obvious response can pay off.
Keep moving
Ninety seconds for ten categories leaves little time to research your vocabulary mentally. If one prompt stalls you, move on and return to it after filling easier categories.
Think like the other players
The best Letterly answer is not necessarily the rarest word you know. It is a correct answer that is uncommon enough to avoid the crowd while still being recognizable as a clear member of its category.
