What Is Wordiply?
Wordiply is a daily word game originally developed for The Guardian. Instead of trying to discover one hidden answer, you are given a short starter word or letter sequence and challenged to find longer valid words that contain that starter.
The basic idea is simple: if the starter is BID, an answer such as forbidden works because the letters B-I-D appear together and in the same order inside the word.
You have five attempts to find strong answers. The goal is not simply to submit any valid word, but to stretch the starter into words that are as long as possible.

The Core Wordiply Rules
Every submitted word must contain the day's starter as one continuous sequence of letters.
For example, if the starter is:
ERA
A valid answer could be:
erasable
The starter does not have to appear at the beginning of the word. It can appear near the start, in the middle, or toward the end, as long as the letters remain together in the correct order.
You get five guesses for each daily puzzle. Longer valid words generally produce a stronger result, so the challenge is to use your limited attempts efficiently.
How to Play Wordiply
- Read the starter. Suppose today's starter is GAL.
- Think of a valid word containing it. A simple first answer might be galactic.
- Search for longer possibilities. Consider prefixes, suffixes, derived words, and words where GAL appears in the middle instead of at the beginning.
- Submit up to five words. Try to improve the length of your answers with each attempt.
- Review your result. After using your guesses, see how strong your longest word and overall set of answers were.
Example: Stretching a Starter
Imagine the starter is:
CAT
A simple answer could be:
catch
A longer option might be:
catching
But you should not assume the best answer begins with CAT. The sequence could be hidden inside a much longer word.
That is the key idea behind Wordiply: instead of solving for one predetermined answer, you search your vocabulary for increasingly ambitious words containing one fixed sequence.
Wordiply Strategy Tips
- Do not treat the starter only as a prefix. Search for words where the letters appear in the middle or near the end.
- Think in prefixes and suffixes. Once you find one valid word, consider whether it can be extended into a longer related form.
- Explore word families. Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and derived forms can lead to longer answers.
- Use all five attempts carefully. Avoid wasting guesses on several nearly identical short words if you can think of stronger alternatives.
- Expand beyond everyday vocabulary. Academic, scientific, technical, and formal English can sometimes provide much longer valid words.
How Wordiply Differs From Wordle
Wordiply does not ask you to identify one secret five-letter word. Instead, many answers can be valid, and the objective is to build longer words containing the day's starter.
There are no Wordle-style green and yellow position clues. The challenge comes from vocabulary, word formation, and spotting short letter sequences inside longer words.
This makes Wordiply more open-ended: two players can submit completely different sets of words and both perform well.
Who Should Play Wordiply?
Wordiply is a good fit for players who enjoy vocabulary challenges, word construction, and quick daily puzzles. It is especially satisfying if you like turning a short prompt into unexpectedly long words and testing the limits of your vocabulary.
