Sudoku Solver: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Sudoku Solver: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Quick Start

Sudoku is a 9×9 logic puzzle where you fill the grid with numbers 1–9. No math or guessing is needed — just clear rules and step-by-step elimination. This guide walks you through solving any Sudoku puzzle from start to finish, whether you’re playing on paper or using an online solver.

Rules

  • The grid has 9 rows, 9 columns, and 9 bold 3×3 boxes.
  • Every row, column, and 3×3 box must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
  • Some cells start with clues already filled in — never change these.
  • You can only place a number if it doesn’t already appear in the same row, column, or box.

how a sudoku solver works

Step-by-Step

Step 1: Scan for Naked Singles
Look for any empty cell that can only be one possible number. Fill it in right away.
Example: If a cell’s row already has 1–4 and 6–9, and its column and box rule out 5 and 7, only 8 remains — place 8.

Step 2: Add Pencil Marks
For every empty cell, lightly write all numbers (1–9) that are still possible (they don’t appear in the same row, column, or box).

Step 3: Find Hidden Singles
Look for a number that can only go in one specific cell inside a row, column, or box — even if that cell has other pencil marks. Fill it in.

Step 4: Spot Pairs & Triples
If two cells in the same row/column/box share exactly the same two possible numbers, those two numbers can be erased from all other cells in that unit.

Step 5: Repeat Until Solved
Go back to Step 1 and keep applying the same techniques. The puzzle will fill itself logically. When every cell has a number and no duplicates exist, you’re done!

Beginner Tips

  • Start with rows, columns, or boxes that have the fewest empty cells — they’re easiest.
  • Always use pencil marks (or the note feature in online games).
  • Work systematically: finish one 3×3 box before moving to the next.
  • If stuck for more than a minute, step away for 30 seconds and look again.
  • Practice on easy puzzles first to build confidence before medium or hard ones.

Common Mistakes

  • Guessing instead of using logic — this often leads to dead ends.
  • Forgetting to check all three areas (row + column + box) for each number.
  • Erasing pencil marks too early or skipping them entirely.
  • Rushing through the grid without a plan — slow and steady wins every time.

Follow these steps and you’ll solve any Sudoku puzzle with confidence!
