What is Connections?

Your goal is NOT to spot every obvious link immediately—it's to survive the gauntlet of 16 deceptively simple words and uncover the four hidden categories that connect them perfectly. Connections presents a grid of 16 words and challenges you to form four groups of four that share a common theme. Some categories are straightforward (like types of fish), while others are delightfully tricky (wordplay, pop culture, or double meanings).

Why play? Because nothing delivers more satisfaction than cracking a tough purple category—or more playful frustration than submitting a group that looks perfect but shares nothing in common. It's ideal for word lovers who enjoy strategic thinking, lateral connections, and the daily thrill of outsmarting the puzzle setter.

Connections Game Rules (The Catch / The Trap)

You are given a grid of 16 words and must sort them into four groups of four words each that share a common theme. Categories are color-coded by difficulty: 🟨 yellow (easiest), 🟩 green, 🟦 blue, and 🟪 purple (hardest).

You can submit up to four incorrect groups before the game ends. Once a correct group is found, those words are removed and the category theme is revealed. The real trap is misleading overlaps—many words could plausibly fit multiple categories, forcing you to choose carefully and avoid burning your precious mistakes.

How To Play Connections?

Step 1: Initial Scan Player Action: Scan the 16 words and look for obvious clusters

• Result: You spot four fish names standing out.
• What This Means: A strong candidate for the easiest (yellow) category emerges early.

Step 2: First Category Found Player Submits: BASS, FLOUNDER, SALMON, TROUT

• Result: ✅ Correct! 🟨 Fish – The group vanishes and the theme is revealed.
• What This Means: You've secured the easiest category and gained momentum. The remaining 12 words look more chaotic.
• Next Move: Look for the next most obvious cluster among the leftovers.

Step 3: Mid-Puzzle Struggle Player Submits: ANGLE, POSITION, STANCE, TAKE

• Result: ✅ Correct! 🟩 Perspective – Another group cleared.
• What This Means: You're making solid progress, but the remaining words have more ambiguous overlaps that could lead to mistakes.
• Next Move: Carefully test potential groups while preserving your remaining mistakes.

Step 4: The Tough One Player Submits: PAPER, RAG, RUSSIAN, TROLL

• Result: ✅ Correct! 🟪 ___ doll – The tricky purple category falls.

• Next Move: Submit the final four words for the remaining category.

Strategy & Tips

Start by scanning for the most obvious category (often yellow) to build confidence and remove words from the grid. Look for patterns like synonyms, wordplay (homophones, prefixes), pop culture references, or shared attributes. Shuffle the grid frequently to see words in new combinations. Avoid rushing—many words fit multiple categories, so test mentally before submitting. The purple category is usually the most devious, often involving clever wordplay.
