What is eraguessr?

EraGuessr does not let you escape with a country name or a vague century. Every historical scene demands two answers: where in the world it belongs and when it happened. A familiar monument may save your map score, then destroy your timeline score when you realize the scene predates the version you recognize.

The game rewards observation rather than pure trivia. Architecture, terrain, clothing, transport, public spaces, and visible technology can all narrow the possibilities. Standard games contain multiple rounds, while the daily challenge gives players the same sequence of historical scenes to solve.

eraguessr Game Rules (The Catch / The Trap)

The trap is simple: location and time count separately. Being brilliant at geography cannot completely rescue a disastrous date.

One scene, two locked decisions

Historical scene → 📍 Map pin + 🕰️ Year

• You MUST place one pin on the world map.
• You MUST choose a specific year on the timeline.
• The correct place and date remain hidden until the guess is submitted.
• Each scene contains visual clues that can help identify both the location and historical period.

The score judges both answers

Location accuracy → How close is your map pin?

Time accuracy → How close is your chosen year?

A strong round requires both answers to land near the target. A nearly perfect location can still produce a disappointing result when the year is centuries away, while an excellent date cannot fully repair a pin dropped on the wrong continent.

The reveal becomes your history lesson

After submitting, EraGuessr reveals the real location and date alongside your geographic and chronological errors. The result exposes which clues you understood and which tiny historical detail led you into the trap.

How To Play eraguessr?

1. Interrogate the scene

Scene clues: Monumental lighthouse, crowded harbor, sailing vessels, classical clothing.

What you learn: The image suggests an ancient Mediterranean trading city, but several locations are still possible.

2. Commit to a place

Player action: Open the map and drop a pin near Alexandria, Egypt.

📍 Guess locked: Alexandria

Next constraint: The geography feels plausible, but now you must decide which period of Alexandria the scene represents.

3. Fight the timeline

Player action: Study the ships, masonry, clothing, and surrounding development before selecting a year.

🕰️ Year guess: 250 BC

What this means: You are betting that the scene belongs to the Hellenistic era rather than Roman, medieval, or modern Alexandria.

4. Face the reveal

Game response: EraGuessr displays the actual map position and year, followed by your location and timeline results.

📍 Location: Very close

🕰️ Date: 140 years too early

What you learn next: Your geographic instinct was strong, but a clue in the ships or architecture should have pushed the date forward. Carry that lesson into the next scene.

eraguessr Strategy & Tips

Separate location clues from date clues. Landscape, coastline, scripts, and building traditions often help with place. Vehicles, clothing cuts, construction materials, and infrastructure are usually stronger chronological evidence.

Estimate broadly before choosing precisely. Decide whether the scene is ancient, medieval, early modern, industrial, or contemporary before hunting for an exact year.

Watch for historical layers. A famous structure may be ancient, but the people, roads, lighting, or surrounding buildings can reveal that the depicted scene comes from a much later period.

Use every reveal as ammunition. Each result trains you to recognize details that can rescue future map pins and timeline guesses.
