What is Grouple?
Grouple is a free browser puzzle in the same family as the NYT Connections format: you get 16 words and must discover four secret groups of four. A new official puzzle appears every day, and anyone can also build community puzzles to share.
It runs on the open web with no login, no ads, and only anonymous play counts for stats.
Rules and core twist
- The board always shows sixteen words.
- Exactly four thematic groups of four are hidden inside.
- You submit four words at a time. A correct set locks in with its color; a wrong set costs one of your four mistakes.
- Clear all four groups before the mistakes run out, then share your result grid.
The twist is the maker mode: you can design your own Grouple and challenge friends or followers, alongside browsing community boards.
How to play
- Open Grouple and start today’s puzzle.
- Tap four words you think share a theme, then submit.
- If you are right, that group locks; if not, you lose one of four mistakes.
- Repeat until all four groups are found — or you run out of mistakes.
- Optional: use Make one to publish a custom puzzle, or Browse community boards.
Tips
- Start with the most specific category (proper names, niche jargon) before vague “things that are blue” style groups.
- When two plausible fours overlap on one word, leave that word for last.
- Save a mistake for the final two groups when the leftover eight look especially ambiguous.
