Histodle

Read a historical event and pinpoint the exact year in six attempts. Histodle turns every wrong date into a timeline clue, telling you whether history lies earlier or later—and how far away you are.

What is histodle?

Histodle puts a historical event in front of you and erases the one detail that could save you: the year. You have six attempts to place that moment correctly on the timeline before history closes the case.

This is not a simple know-it-or-lose-it quiz. Every incorrect year becomes a rangefinder, revealing whether your guess was too early or too late and how many years separate you from the answer. Even a wild opening guess can become the first move in a sharp chronological hunt.

histodle Game Rules (The Catch / The Trap)

Each daily puzzle presents a description of one historical event. Your mission is to enter the exact year in which it occurred.

You have six attempts to find the answer. After an incorrect guess, Histodle gives you directional and distance feedback:

1945 → TOO EARLY · 12 years away

1961 → TOO LATE · 4 years away

1957 → CORRECT

  • TOO EARLY: The event happened after the year you entered.
  • TOO LATE: The event happened before your guess.
  • Years away: Shows the size of your mistake, helping you shrink the remaining range.
  • Exact year: Only the precise year defeats the puzzle.
  • Sixth miss: The round is lost and the correct answer is revealed.

After the round, the historical explanation gives the puzzle more weight than a bare trivia question—you leave with either a victory or a new fact.

How To Play histodle?

1. Inspect the historical clue

Event: “The first artificial satellite was launched into orbit.”

Look for anchors such as the technology involved, the political era, and the countries likely connected to the event.

2. Establish a timeline boundary

Player Guesses: 1945

Result: TOO EARLY · 12 years away

What This Means: The event occurred after World War II, and the distance clue points directly toward the late 1950s.

3. Attack from the other side

Player Guesses: 1961

Result: TOO LATE · 4 years away

Next Constraint: The answer is earlier than 1961. Combined with the first result, the target is now trapped between 1945 and 1961.

4. Lock in the exact year

Player Guesses: 1957

Result: CORRECT

Sputnik 1 has been identified, the timeline survives, and your remaining attempts stay untouched.

histodle Strategy & Tips

Use your first guess as a historical anchor rather than a random number. Dates such as 1789, 1914, 1945, and 1991 divide modern history into recognizable periods and can quickly expose which side of a major era contains the answer.

Pay attention to the distance as much as the earlier-or-later direction. A guess that is 80 years away demands a major chronological jump; one that is only three years away calls for careful adjustment. When the clue mentions technology, warfare, transportation, or political institutions, ask when those things became possible before committing to a year.
