Read the Tape

Read the Tape
Read the Tape gives you five anonymous S&P 500 charts each day and asks whether each stock will finish higher or lower five trading days later. Choose your conviction, size a paper wager, and discover whether your chart-reading instincts can beat a troop of coin-flipping monkeys.
What is Read the Tape?
Read the Tape strips away company names, dates, headlines, and comforting explanations. You receive five historical S&P 500 charts and must make the only decision that matters: will the price close higher or lower five trading days after the visible chart ends?
Every player receives the same daily hand. You can examine the price action and optional indicators, select how strongly you believe your prediction, and place a paper wager from a virtual $10,000 pool. Once the hidden future is revealed, the game measures your performance against the Monkey Index—eleven virtual monkeys making random low-confidence calls.
Read the Tape Game Rules (The Catch / The Trap)
Each daily game contains five blind historical charts with their ticker symbols and dates hidden. Prices are normalized so the visible series begins at 100, preventing the stock’s normal price range from exposing its identity.
The battle follows this sequence:
BLIND CHART → CONVICTION → ▲ UP / ▼ DOWN → FIVE-DAY REVEAL
For every chart:
- Study the visible daily price movement.
- Toggle available chart information such as RSI, moving averages, and volume when useful.
- Choose Low, Medium, or High conviction.
- Your conviction level determines the size of your paper wager.
- Select ▲ UP when you expect the stock to close higher after five trading days.
- Select ▼ DOWN when you expect it to close lower.
- The stock identity, historical dates, and unseen price movement are then revealed.
Your call is about the stock price alone. The monkeys do not determine whether your direction was correct; they act as a random benchmark against which your paper performance is compared. No real money, options, or leverage are involved.
The trap is false confidence. A beautiful breakout can collapse immediately, while an ugly selloff can rebound the moment you declare it doomed. Selecting High conviction does not make your prediction more accurate—it simply gives a mistake sharper teeth.

Read the Tape Strategy & Tips
Start with market structure rather than a dramatic final candle. Look for the prevailing trend, repeated support or resistance zones, failed breakouts, gaps, and whether momentum appears to be strengthening or fading.
Use indicators as supporting witnesses, not commanding officers. An oversold RSI does not guarantee a rebound, and a moving-average crossover cannot see the hidden earnings announcement waiting outside the chart.
Match conviction to uncertainty. When the evidence conflicts, Low conviction preserves more of the virtual bankroll. Save High conviction for charts where several independent clues point toward the same direction—and remain prepared for the tape to humiliate you anyway.
