What is AO3dle?

Your goal is NOT to be right every time—it's to survive the gauntlet of fandom obscurity as long as possible. AO3dle throws two characters (or tags) from across every corner of fanfiction at you and demands: which one has more works on Archive of Our Own? One wrong click and your streak is dead. It's a brutal, hilarious psychological test of how well you actually understand the twisted hierarchy of fanfic popularity.

Why play? Because nothing exposes your blind spots like realizing your favorite rarepair character gets crushed by some background anime guy you've never heard of. Perfect for AO3 addicts who want to turn endless scrolling into competitive glory.

AO3dle Game Rules (The Catch / The Trap)

1. 🟩 The Higher Rule (Must Choose Correctly): You MUST select the character or tag with strictly more AO3 works. Correct guess = streak continues.

2. ⬛ The Lower Trap (Forbidden Mistake): Picking the one with fewer works is FORBIDDEN and instantly resets your streak to zero. No mercy.

3. 🟥 The Reveal Rule (No Escape): After every guess, the exact work counts are revealed. You MUST accept the cold truth of AO3 stats—no appeals, no excuses.

4. The Daily Lock (Must Survive All): In Daily Challenge mode, you face a fixed set of 10 matchups. You are NOT ALLOWED to skip or retry; one mistake and your daily run ends.

How To Play AO3dle?

Step 1: Enter the Arena Player Guesses: Click the left or right character

• The Situation: The arena opens. Two titans of fanfic appear. Your gut screams one name.
• New Rules:
  1. Next guess MUST correctly identify the true higher-work character
  2. Cannot rely solely on franchise popularity—AO3 has its own dark logic

Step 2: First Blood Player Guesses: Draco Malfoy

• Feedback: Draco Malfoy 🟩 3.2k works Harry Potter ⬛ 1.8k works
• The Situation: Victory! Your knowledge of Draco's redemption arc thirst holds strong. Streak: 1. But the game is only warming up.
• New Rules:
  1. Next pair MUST be judged purely on AO3 numbers, not personal bias
  2. Cannot underestimate obscure characters from massive fandoms

Step 3: The Twist Player Guesses: Background Anime Guy

• Feedback: Your Rarepair OC ⬛ 42 works Background Anime Guy 🟩 12.4k works
• The Situation: Catastrophe. Your beloved rarepair gets obliterated by a character who appeared for three seconds in season 2. Streak shattered.
• New Rules:
  1. Future guesses MUST factor in hidden popularity from side characters and tags
  2. Cannot trust main character privilege—AO3 doesn't

Step 4: Daily Domination (Advanced) Player Guesses: Chain of 8 correct choices in Daily mode

• Feedback: Progressive reveals with increasing difficulty, ending in a brutal final matchup
• The Situation: You're in the zone. The global leaderboard watches. One final trap stands between you and daily glory.
• New Rules:
  1. You MUST maintain focus through all 10 comparisons
  2. No rage-quitting allowed when the stats betray your entire fandom understanding
