What Is Lexicle?
Lexicle is a daily word puzzle built around meaning rather than spelling. Every puzzle asks you to identify one five-letter mystery word, with up to 11 guesses available.
Unlike Wordle-style games, Lexicle does not tell you whether individual letters are correct or in the right position. Instead, every submitted word is compared with the target based on its semantic relationship. A guess that means something similar to the answer will appear warmer, while an unrelated word will be colder.
A new puzzle is published each day at 8:00 AM CST, and the game also tracks scores and streaks.
The Semantic Hot-and-Cold Twist
The main challenge is interpreting relationships between words rather than manipulating letters.
For example, imagine the hidden word is:
MONEY
Possible guesses might behave like this:
- FUNDS — very warm because it is closely related in meaning
- BANKS — warm because banks are strongly associated with money
- GIVES — somewhat related, but less directly
- CHECK — connected through financial contexts
- PUPPY — cold because it has little semantic relationship to money
The exact letters shared with the answer are not what matters. A word can look completely different from the target and still provide a strong clue if its meaning is close.
Each day's puzzle also provides information such as the target word's part of speech and an initial relationship clue. Subsequent guesses help narrow the semantic neighborhood until the answer becomes clear.
How to Play Lexicle
- Read the opening clues. Check the target's part of speech and the relationship hint shown for the day's puzzle.
- Enter a valid five-letter word. Your first guess should test a broad interpretation of the clue rather than trying to match particular letters.
- Check how warm the guess is. A warmer result means your word is semantically closer to the mystery word; a colder result suggests moving toward a different concept.
- Use each result to explore nearby meanings. If a word is warm, try synonyms, related objects, actions, categories, or concepts associated with it.
- Find the target within 11 guesses. Solving with fewer guesses leaves more unused attempts and produces a higher score.

The opening clue can often support several interpretations. Use early guesses to test different semantic directions before spending multiple attempts on near-synonyms from a weak branch.
Explore around warm words
When a guess becomes noticeably warmer, investigate its semantic neighborhood. Useful follow-ups can include:
- synonyms
- antonyms
- objects commonly associated with the word
- actions involving the word
- broader categories
- more specific examples
For instance, if a financial word becomes warm, guesses involving money, payments, banking, or transactions may reveal which part of that concept is closest to the target.
Pay attention to the part of speech
Knowing whether the answer is a noun, verb, adjective, or more than one can eliminate otherwise tempting guesses. A semantic connection may be strong while still pointing toward the wrong grammatical role.
Compare several warm guesses
One warm word can be misleading because words can be related in many ways. Two or three warm guesses often reveal the shared concept more clearly. Look for the idea that connects them rather than focusing only on the hottest individual guess.
