What is Mathler?

Mathler is a mathematical puzzle game similar to Wordle, but instead of guessing words, you must find a hidden calculation that equals a given target number. The game combines arithmetic with logical deduction.

Each day features a new equation to solve, and all players solve the same puzzle.

Mathler Game Rules

  1. Objective: Find the hidden calculation in 6 attempts
  2. Target Number: You're given the result (e.g., "= 20")
  3. Equation Length: Usually 6 characters (can vary by difficulty)
  4. Valid Operations: Use +, -, *, /
  5. Color Feedback:
    • 🟩 Green — Correct digit/operator in correct position
    • 🟨 Yellow — Correct digit/operator in wrong position
    • ⬜ Gray — Digit/operator not in the equation
  6. Rules:
    • Must be a valid calculation
    • Follows order of operations (PEMDAS)
    • Result must equal the target number

How To Play Mathler

Let's walk through an example (target number is 20):

Guess 1

Player Guesses: 10+10= (trying simple addition)

Feedback:

  • 1 🟨 — In equation, wrong position
  • 0 🟨 — In equation, wrong position
    • ⬜ — Not in equation
  • 1 🟨 — In equation, wrong position
  • 0 🟨 — In equation, wrong position

Analysis: Contains 1 and 0, but not addition. Maybe multiplication or subtraction?

Guess 2

Player Guesses: 4*5-0= (trying multiplication)

Feedback:

  • 4 ⬜ — Not in equation
    • 🟩 — Correct!
  • 5 ⬜ — Not in equation
    • ⬜ — Not in equation
  • 0 🟨 — In equation, wrong position

Analysis: Has multiplication in position 2, and contains 0 somewhere

Guess 3

Player Guesses: 2*10-0 (2 × 10 = 20)

Feedback: All 🟩 — Correct!

Success! Found the equation in 3 attempts.

Mathler Strategy Tips

  1. Start Simple: Try basic operations with common numbers
  2. Order of Operations: Remember PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)
  3. Factor the Target: Think about factors of the target number
    • 20 = 2×10, 4×5, 20×1
    • 20 = 25-5, 30-10
  4. Use Yellow Hints: Rearrange digits/operators that are in the equation
  5. Common Patterns:
    • Multiplication often appears in middle positions
    • Division less common but possible
    • Addition/subtraction often at the end

Common Equation Patterns

6-Character Equations

  • AB*CD= (e.g., 12*34=)
  • AB+CD= (e.g., 15+25=)
  • AB-CD= (e.g., 50-30=)
  • AB/C-D (e.g., 20/4-2)

Tips for Each Operation

  • Multiplication (*): Look for factor pairs
  • Division (/): Consider divisors of the target
  • Addition (+): Think of number pairs that sum to target
  • Subtraction (-): Consider differences
